REPORTED CASES :

Craighead v. Lee and City of St. Paul, --F.3d—(8th Cir. 2005):  Denial of qualified immunity affirmed by Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals in civil rights case.  A Good Samaritan had wrested a handgun from a man on a shooting spree in St. Paul.  As the man tried to grab the gun back, a St. Paul police officer arrived armed with a shotgun.  The officer got out of his squad and immediately shot both men killing the Good Samaritan.  The officer’s attempts to claim immunity were rejected by both the federal district court and the federal court of appeals.

Santiago v. State, 644 N.W2d 425 (Minn. 2002): Murder conviction reversed.  This is the leading case on severance and joinder of defendants in Minnesota.  Goetz was able to convince the Minnesota Supreme Court not to follow federal law and instead maintain Minnesota’s more strict rules against joinder of defendants.

State v. Patrick, 512 N.W.2d 344 (Minn. Ct. App. 1994):  Murder conviction reversed.  Goetz successfully argued that trial court’s evidentiary errors deprived his client of a fair trial.

Gasparre v. City of St. Paul, 501 N.W.2d 683 (Minn. Ct. App. 1993):  Denial of qualified immunity for police officer who broke man’s arm affirmed.
